Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

hosting and domain names
9:35 pm ~ Comments Off
Filed Under: Site Related, The Internets

I get a lot of emails from people asking me how they can start up their own blog, and which hosting companies are good to use. I’m always able to lend a hand on getting a blog going, but I’m not usually as helpful on which hosting companies are the best. We own our own server, so I basically have my own “hosting”. Most of the time I direct people to web hosting review sites such as webhostingbluebook.net. This website is a very helpful tool in helping you narrow down your hosting choices. I like their easy layout and navigation. They also have some good articles available to get you started on building your website or blog, such as what is hosting, what are databases, and what is a domain name.

Which brings me to my next little bit of advice, when starting your own website you have to have a great domain name. I decided on “A Little Less Ordinary” because it’s my opinion that my life is not such an ordinary one. Not everyone has the whole “love at first sight” thing where it’s actually real. And then spontaneous fraternal twins! Since meeting my husband my life has been anything but ordinary… in a very good way! My old domain name for my blog (from when I was 15-21), as a lot of you remember, was insydious.net. Insidious meaning “seemingly harmless but actually very dangerous”. It fit me at that period of time in my life. So, when you’re choosing a domain name for your website or blog, try to pick one that describes you or your life.

It’s always humorous to stumble across a blog of a person and come to find out the domain name doesn’t even come close to fitting the author. Good .com names are hard to find these days because a lot of people/companies will “squat” on a good name and only use it for useless ads. But, if you take some time to think it out, a great name will come to you.

printing website

I’ve been surfing around the last few days looking for some ideas for the girls birthday party invitations, and I saw a cute postcard idea. This website had templates you can use to make postcard invitations but they were kind of expensive, so then I started looking around for cheap postcards and came across vistaprint.com. They have good deals on postcards, address labels, magnets, checks, and stamps. The cool part if you can customize all of their products. They have this cute little thing where you can create your own caricature and add it to different products, or you can make your own templates and upload your photos.
Basically anything that you would need to print you can order there like invitations, greeting cards, business cards, gift tags, etc. I like a lot of their pregnancy/birth announcement designs too. And, since I like a good deal and I know you probably do as well, if you do order from them you can get 100 free postcards because of this blog post! All you have to do is use coupon code “BlogPostcards100” at checkout to receive 100 free postcards. Sweet! They actually have a whole section of their site that has free products. I love free stuff. Who doesn’t love free stuff?!

managing the debt monster
8:52 pm ~ 4

If you’re like most Americans out there, you have some debt. Maybe it’s a lot, maybe it’s a little, but most everyone has some. Luckily ours is under control and coming down nicely. Some people are not so fortunate though and for whatever reason have a ton of debt and can’t seem to tackle it. Recently I was browsing the web looking for tips on Debt Consolidation and came across a lot of very helpful websites. I’ve known people who have used debt management programs before and it worked wonders. It’s probably not something that the average person would need, but if you have a lot of debt it’s definitely something to consider. This particular site I linked is a credit counseling service that can help you to take control of your finances. They offer things like debt analysis that allows you to see exactly where you stand financially, and credit repair.
Debt is no fun. So, check the site out if you think it’s something that might be beneficial to you.

Sarah Needs

I’m playing a little game… repost this on your blog and play too! Here’s what you do, go to Google and type in “(your name) needs” and then list out the funniest search results you find! Here’s mine:

Sarah needs a cold shower.

Sarah needs to hand him one of those weapons that went off without warning.

Sarah needs your manly vote.

Sarah needs you.

Sarah needs to lean on her man.

Sarah needs to make a cake and some cookies.

Sarah needs to set up her experiment by finding subjects and gathering the materials that she wrote down before.

Sarah needs to open up more on her Italian and tone it down on her English.

Sarah needs to come down so we can design wallpaper paterns and plastic furniture.

Sarah needs some of Roger Clemens’ steroids.

Sarah needs to put on a few pounds before she starts worrying about having a big butt.

Sarah needs to go night-night.

Okay, mine were not all that crazy. I want to see some of yours, so play the game!

All the cool people have blogs
9:06 pm ~ 19

And we all know life is all about being cool, right?

I was reading this post by Amanda on how non-bloggers view the blogosphere. I have to agree with her. Some people find it strange that a person would want to blog about every little detail of their life and diss on it like it’s some weird strange thing. Hello! This is 2008. Blogs are not new and they are certainly not odd. The only thing that is odd are the people who diss on you and call you odd for having a blog, but then obsess over your blog multiple times a day. (And then make their own secret blog to obsess over you even more… lol)

I’m wondering, for those hip enough to embrace the 21st century, why do you blog?

I blog because it’s just what I do. It’s my creative outlet. I get hot at the sight of html and css, and having a blog allows me to get my coding fix in regularly. Also, I’ve been blogging since I was 15 and for some strange reason, people have always come to my blogs see what I have to say. Apparently I’ve said something worth reading over the last 8-9 years. I love to write. I admit, I don’t do my best writing on here, I need to work on putting more effort in to my posts. But, I’ve always received high compliments on my writing, so having a blog allows me to write something regularly. Also, I like to share information, knowledge, and experience with other people in hopes that I will help someone somehow. I have received numerous emails from people telling me that I made an impact in their lives by something I’ve said and that is just the best feeling. And last, but not least, I love to connect with other people online who share common interests. It’s nice for me to be able to chat with and read about other moms of twins who are my age, because I don’t have many opportunities to meet young mothers of twins otherwise.

So anyway, that’s why I blog. How ’bout you? Don’t just lurk, come on, post a comment!

Earn Money

I’ve had several people ask me lately how they can make money with their blog, so I made a new page with lots of good resources here. Check it out if you like making money. There’s links to places for paid blogging and also links for places where you just sell links or put up banners. They are all really good sites though.

Okay time to feed the punkins!
